REVIEW: Princess Diaries – Royal Wedding

The Princess Diaries books are/were very special for me. It’s one of the series that taught me that books can be funny and main characters can be flawed. It’s one of the series that made me want to become a writer in the first place.

Royal Wedding made a great addition to the Princess Diaries lineup. Mia is now all grown up, dealing with paparazzi at every turn while still trying to have a career (she is involved with several charities) and something of a love and social life.

I love that writer Mag Cabot keeps Mia’s voice pure and loyal to the established character, keeping many of her lovable quirks, while maturing the character into a grown up. Really well done.

It made me laugh. It made me tear up. (To be fair, I’m getting married in 2.5 months so basically everything wedding-related makes me well up.) Loved seeing how her friends and family have developed too. As expected, Grandmére is still the same. Thank goodness.

Also, I’m so glad that this book doesn’t appear to be a one-off, as it’s Princess Diaries #11. And seriously, who would leave a book series at ELEVEN books? Especially when we’re about to see Mia move to Genovia. I can’t wait to see her bein’ a badass boss.

Meg Cabot is still the queen of fun fiction and Mia is still fantastic.

What’s on Page 45? + Giveaway

As a part of the events going on during International Chick Lit Month, several chick lit authors are posting the contents of page 45 of one of their books. You can view page 45 from Molly Miranda: Thief for Hire below.

This is a conversation between Molly and Rhys during their first assignment together. Molly doesn’t know him very well, and certainly doesn’t trust this bold stranger she’s been partnered up with. Turns out, he knows more about her than she knows about him…

You can find details to our yummy giveaway under the excerpt.

It was time for me to be assertive. “Why did you call me ‘Molly’ earlier?”
Rhys riffled through his suitcase. “Because that’s your name.”
“Why do you think that’s my name?”
He shrugged. “Audrey told me.”
“No, she didn’t. She knows me as Betty Bruce. That’s my name.”
Rhys smirked. “Betty Bruce sounds like a superhero name. Also, that’s the name on your fake passport, not your real name—”
“No, it’s—”
“Your name is Molly Miranda. You live in New York. You own a flat in Manhattan and you live with a waiter named Nate.” He looked at me. “Is he your boyfriend?”
Damn it.
“We’re just friends,” I snapped. “And don’t say ‘waiter’ like it’s a big deal because I’m from New York. Half the people in New York who are in their twenties work in food service. Nate and I are just—”
“You said you’re from New York, but you’re not. You’re from Vermont.”
My chest was heaving and my knuckles hurt from squeezing my fists. “How do you know all this stuff about me?”
He crossed his arms over his chest. “Now what kind of professional would I be if I didn’t check up on the young ingénue I’d be sharing an assignment with?”
I stared at him. “Go on.”
“Audrey told me your name is Betty Bruce. First I hacked into the American passport database and found Betty’s passport and acquired your photograph.”
Like all passport photos, mine was terrible. I looked like an annoyed zombie.
Rhys spoke quickly and without any hesitation. His Scottish accent wasn’t thick enough for me to misunderstand him.
“Betty Bruce doesn’t have much of an online identity— no Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever. So, I used the FBI’s facial recognition software to cross-reference it with anyone else with an American passport.”

Intrigued? You can pick up the Kindle version of Molly Miranda: Thief for Hire for $0.99 all month long. Happy Chick Lit Month everyone!

Meet Molly’s Men

I’ll admit it: there’s a subtle romantic subplot in Molly Miranda: Thief for Hire.

Near the beginning of the book, Molly “accidentally” sleeps with her charming roommate, Nathan “Nate” Bryant, a waiter who dreams of becoming a full-time comic book artist. This complicates their relationship because, obviously, he doesn’t know she’s a professional contract burglar.

As soon as she is given the opportunity to get away from the post-hookup awkwardness, she meets another guy. Rhys is a suave, smartass Scot who seems to “get” Molly pretty well. In fact, he’s a thief too. Things go swimmingly until Rhys proves himself untrustworthy…

You can learn more about Nate and Rhys in Molly Miranda: Thief for Hire, available on paperback, Kindle, Kobo and iBooks. Or you can add it to your To Reads list on Goodreads.

Obligatory Pre-Publication Post

That post title might not be entirely fair, considering my paperback has technically been available for over a week and my Kindle ebook has been available in the UK for over two hours. (Time zones. What are ya gonna do?)

These past few months have been so insane. I want to give extra thank-you’s to Colby, Mom and Dad, Grandma, Colleen and the guys from work who have been so very patient with me while I freaked out, panicked, stressed and/or doubted this whole thing. I want to thank the many people who have purchased signed copies from my online store and the people who made pre-orders. Thumbs up, you guys. Thumbs up.

I also want to thank these lovely people for their fantastic reviews of the book. Love, love, love. Love.

I also want to thank Liberty for having me over for a guest post on her blog.

I’m so excited to get back to writing the Molly Miranda sequel and maybe get my head back into the wedding planning space. (I should probably focus on that at least a little bit before the big day in September…)

P.S. I turned 27 on Tuesday. So far, my late 20s aren’t looking so bad. 🙂

Production Update (Another Sponsored Post)

This blog post is sponsored by Cedar & Watson. Cedar & Watson is an accounting firm in Brooklyn, New York.

“We specialize in personal, business and corporate accounts where lots of money is involved. Big money, big money!” explains co-owner Ruby Watson.

Co-owner Eli Cedar adds, “Ruby, do you always describe our business like that?”

Note: This is not a real business, but one of the business that appear in Molly Miranda: Thief for Hire. Enter to win this book by coming to my Facebook book launch in February!

unnamedAhem, in other news: advanced reader copy ebooks are finished and sent off to reviewers. But I’m not done looking for advanced reviewers!

If Molly Miranda: Thief for Hire sounds like a good read to you, let me know and I’ll send over a copy. (Learn more about this book.)

If anyone is having trouble converting their MS Word documents to ebooks, I highly recommend you check out Simon Whistler’s video tutorial. I love Simon’s podcast Rocking Self Publishing and happened to see the post on his blog and man! It was an enormous help. I just needed to give a shoutout to Simon because the tutorial was such a help.

My editors Colleen McKie and Allister Thompson have been wonderful. Next, my book goes to the proofreader to be proofed. Then I lay out the paperback version. I can’t wait to see my baby with a real cover, a spine and pages. I’m going to sniff those pages so hard.

I plan to give my Indiegogo campaign contributors their ebook copies before the February 6th release date. If all goes as planned, I should be able to get paperback copies out before then as well, but I don’t want to over-promise.

I’ve started researching the sequel and I’m SO EXCITED about the possibilities! Where will Molly go this time? Will she get caught? Will she get together with her love interest or will they just end up killing one another?

You’ll have to stay tuned to find out…
